Decebalus was the final independent king of Dacia, ruling from approximately 87 AD until 106 AD. He united the Dacian tribes of the Carpathian region (modern Romania) and transformed their kingdom into a formidable power capable of challenging the Roman Empire.Under Decebalus the Dacians first clashed with Rome during the reign of Emperor Domitian. After initial successes, a peace treaty in 89 AD recognized Decebalus as a Roman client king and provided him with subsidies and technical aid. Relations deteriorated under Emperor Trajan. In the First Dacian War (101–102 AD) Trajan invaded Dacia, defeated Decebalus’s forces, and forced him to accept harsher terms, including the demolition of fortifications and the surrender of territory.Decebalus soon violated the treaty. Trajan launched the Second Dacian War in 105 AD. Roman legions advanced on the Dacian capital Sarmizegetusa, which fell in 106 AD. Facing certain capture, Decebalus took his own life. His severed head was displayed in Rome. The conquest of Dacia brought the empire rich gold and silver mines and led to the creation of the Roman province of Dacia. Primary accounts of Decebalus’s reign and wars survive in the writings of Cassius Dio and in the detailed reliefs of Trajan’s Column in Rome. These sources portray him as a skilled strategist and resilient adversary whose resistance marked one of the last major challenges to Roman expansion in Europe.
