Julius Caesar (100–44 BC) was a brilliant Roman general, statesman, and dictator whose military conquests and political ambition reshaped the ancient world. He rose to power through successful campaigns in Gaul (58–50 BC), then crossed the Rubicon River in 49 BC, sparking a civil war against Pompey and the Senate. Victorious, he was appointed dictator for life and introduced major reforms, including the Julian calendar. His growing power led to his assassination on the Ides of March (15 March 44 BC) by a group of senators, including Brutus and Cassius. Caesar’s life and death marked the end of the Roman Republic and paved the way for the Roman Empire under his adopted heir, Octavian (Augustus).
