Marcus Aurelius (April 26, 121 – March 17, 180 CE) was a Roman emperor who ruled from 161 to 180, the last of the Five Good Emperors. Born in Rome as Marcus Annius Verus and adopted by Antoninus Pius at Hadrian’s direction, he initially co-ruled with Lucius Verus before becoming sole emperor. Much of his reign was spent defending the empire’s northern frontiers during the Marcomannic Wars against Germanic tribes. A committed Stoic philosopher, he wrote his personal reflections, the Meditations, in Greek while on campaign. He died on the Danube frontier and was succeeded by his son Commodus.
