Pericles (c. 495–429 BCE) was the foremost Athenian statesman, orator, and general who guided Athens through its Classical Golden Age in the 5th century BCE. Born into the aristocratic Alcmaeonid family—his mother Agariste was related to the democratic reformer Cleisthenes—he rose to prominence in the 460s BCE by allying with Ephialtes against the conservative leader Cimon. After Ephialtes’ assassination, Pericles became the dominant political figure, serving repeatedly as strategos (general) and shaping Athenian policy for over three decades. He expanded radical democracy by introducing payment for public service, including jury duty, which allowed poorer citizens greater participation in the Assembly and courts. Under his leadership, Athens transformed the Delian League into an Athenian empire, using its treasury to fund an ambitious building program that included the Parthenon, Propylaea, and other monuments on the Acropolis—projects that celebrated Athenian power and piety after the Persian Wars. Pericles also patronized arts and philosophy, associating with figures such as the sculptor Phidias, the playwright Sophocles, and the philosopher Anaxagoras.Militarily, he pursued a cautious strategy during the early Peloponnesian War (431–404 BCE) against Sparta and its allies: relying on Athens’ superior navy, avoiding major land battles, and protecting the city behind its Long Walls while conducting coastal raids. His famous Funeral Oration, preserved by the historian Thucydides, praised Athenian democracy, civic virtue, and cultural superiority. Pericles died in 429 BCE during the devastating plague that struck Athens in the war’s second year, leaving the city without its most skilled leader and marking the beginning of its eventual decline.
