Leonidas I (c. 540–480 BCE) was a king of Sparta from the Agiad dynasty who ruled from approximately 489 BCE until his death. Best known for his leadership during the Second Persian Invasion, he commanded a small Greek force of about 7,000 men—including his elite 300 Spartans—at the Battle of Thermopylae in 480 BCE. Facing the vastly larger army of Persian king Xerxes I, Leonidas and his troops held the narrow mountain pass for three days, buying critical time for the Greek city-states to prepare their defenses. He fell in battle on the final day, and his stand became a lasting symbol of courage and sacrifice in ancient Greek history, as recorded by Herodotus.
