Grenadiers à Cheval were an elite heavy cavalry regiment of Napoleon Bonaparte’s Imperial Guard and among the most prestigious mounted troops of the First French Empire. Formally incorporated into the Imperial Guard in 1804, these veteran cavalrymen were typically held in reserve near the Emperor and committed at decisive moments of battle. They distinguished themselves in major Napoleonic engagements including Austerlitz, Eylau, Hanau, and Waterloo. Known for their imposing appearance, discipline, and powerful cavalry charges, the Grenadiers à Cheval became one of the most recognizable symbols of Napoleon’s legendary Old Guard and the military might of the Grande Armée.
