Boudicca (also spelled Boudica) was a 1st-century AD queen of the Iceni, a Celtic tribe inhabiting what is now eastern England. After the death of her husband, King Prasutagus, around 60 AD, Roman authorities annexed Iceni lands, ignoring his will that left the kingdom jointly to his daughters and the emperor. According to the Roman historians Tacitus and Cassius Dio, officials ordered Boudicca publicly flogged and her daughters assaulted. These actions triggered a widespread uprising. In 60 or 61 AD Boudicca united the Iceni with neighboring tribes, including the Trinovantes, and led a large-scale revolt against Roman rule in Britain. Her forces destroyed the colony at Camulodunum (modern Colchester), the provincial capital, then sacked Londinium (London) and Verulamium (St Albans). Tens of thousands of Roman citizens and allies were killed. The rebellion was ultimately crushed by the Roman governor Gaius Suetonius Paulinus at the Battle of Watling Street. Boudicca died shortly afterward; ancient sources differ on whether she took poison or succumbed to illness. Primary evidence for her life and campaigns comes exclusively from Roman writers. No contemporary British records survive. Her name derives from a Celtic root meaning “victory.” Boudicca’s revolt remains one of the most significant recorded challenges to Roman authority in Britain and marks a key episode in the early history of Roman occupation of the island.

Wear it when you want to channel determination and quiet rebellion — on walks through the city, at casual meetups, or layered under a jacket for a museum day.
