In the First Dacian War (101–102 AD) Trajan invaded Dacia, defeated Decebalus’s forces, and forced him to accept harsher terms, including the demolition of fortifications and the surrender of territory.Decebalus soon violated the treaty. Trajan launched the Second Dacian War in 105 AD. Roman legions advanced on the Dacian capital Sarmizegetusa, which fell in 106 AD. Facing certain capture, Decebalus took his own life. His severed head was displayed in Rome. The conquest of Dacia brought the empire rich gold and silver mines and led to the creation of the Roman province of Dacia. Primary accounts of Decebalus’s reign and wars survive in the writings of Cassius Dio and in the detailed reliefs of Trajan’s Column in Rome.
